St Albans Bach
Choir gave its inaugural concert in March 1924 with a performance of Bach's
St Matthew Passion which, along with Bach's other major choral works,
the choir still regularly performs. The choir
presents a wide variety of music in its concert programmes, whilst continuing
to perform the major works in the choral repertoire. Christmas concerts in aid
of charity are given every year and the choir has featured on a
CD of Christmas music.
The choir engages soloists and orchestras of the highest calibre,
but also has a tradition of engaging young singers, many of whom have since
developed international careers. The choir
is privileged to perform in the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St
Alban, as it has since its inception. In keeping with tradition, Andrew Lucas, the Cathedral's Master of the
Music, is the choir's Music Director.
Alexander Woodrow, Organ Scholar at the
Cathedral, is the choir's accompanist. St
Albans Bach Choir is a member of Making Music.
NEWS
- Our November Concert, Carmina Burana, was a
sell-out, with the choir's largest-ever audience. One member of that audience,
Sally Brook was the lucky winner of the Audience Survey Prize Draw and
received John Lewis vouchers worth £20.
- Writing about the concert in the Herts
Advertiser John Manning said: "For all concerned this was an outstanding
evening of music and one can only wonder how Andrew Lucas and the choir can
continue to improve and excite. The next major concert, Bach's St Matthew
Passion, at the end of March is something to be anticipated."
